Where Stone is Unscarred

Headstones for the Wheeler family in Morningside Cemetery off Raymond Street and U.S. Route 11 in the town of Malone, Franklin County, New York. William A. Wheeler (1819-1887) was a Republican US Congressman and vice president under President Rutherford B. Hayes. While all these solid, white marble grave markers are majestic in their own right, I’m particularly drawn to the wreath carved on the headstone for William’s wife, Mary King Wheeler (1828-1876). It’s incredibly detailed and must have taken a skilled hand to carve.
