So Sad Your Sorrow

Memorial for George F. Sawyer (unk-1852) in Greenwood Cemetery on South Main Street (U.S. Route 7) and St. Albans State Highway in St. Albans City, Franklin County, Vermont. This unusual monument commemorates Mr. Sawyer, a purser in the U.S. Navy. A purser is a ship’s supply officer. He died at Spezia, Sardina, an Italian island in the Mediterranean Sea.

I say it’s unusual because his wife, Mary Ann Houghton (1823-1906), has a simple headstone with a cross. Perhaps this female state is meant to personify her, watching over her husband’s grave. An urn represents mourning, and an inverted torch represents a life extinguished.
