Lydia’s Stone

Headstone for Lydia Caird (1765-1818) in Bemis Cemetery, on a hill just north of County Road 22 and Hull Road, south of Pulpit Rock State Forest, in Jefferson County, New York. The Oswegatchie River flows north of this intersection. This is one of the older headstones I’ve found in Northern New York. The local Masonic lodge graciously came through and cleaned up this cemetery a few years ago, giving this 200-year-old marker a new lease on life.
