A Lone Rose

Headstone for Elizabeth (Faichney) Lockie (1819-1876) in Oxbow New Cemetery, off County Road 25, just east of Oxbow, Jefferson County, New York. Oxbow is a tiny hamlet along the Oswegatchie River. This is another wonderful example of a “white bronze” (zinc) marker, manufactured in the late 19th Century. It’s just as clear as the day it was made, over 140 years ago. As you can see from the sagging vase, one drawback of this material is a tendency to warp and buckle under certain conditions.
